Why dashcams are great but also useless.

Driving home my normal route along OH-2 Westbound a funny thing happened. Well, it's not so much funny as it is PANTS-SHITTINGLY ENRAGING.

As I was approaching the Rte. 91 exit an SUV decided to test it's AWD capabilities through a bank of slush and ice because, well, we've all been there.. They REALLY needed to get off the freeway in a hurry. Who knows, maybe they were late for fondue class at the community college.

Here's what transpired.

Clearly you can see the SUVs license plate SO WELL. I guess dashcams are good for a lot of things. My luck with mine has proven otherwise. Even if I could get their license plate out of this I don't think it would do any good unless I wanted to egg their house or go Walter Sobchak on their parked SUV.

And here's the aftermath.

Obviously I'm out a corner lamp... I guess I can "upgrade" to Marauder corners if i really wanted to.

This all just convinces me that I need to battle prep my car for winter driving/commuting.

Im currently entertaining the idea of getting a dashcam. Would you recommend it? What is your reason for having one?

Vince sent me a 91 colony park LS with 150k miles on it that had a slipping trans for $1900. It took me 45 minutes to explain how buying a car with a shot trans is not a good idea when the parts + labor for fixing the trans will cost more than the car is worth. I'm still not sure he's 100% convinced.

Also marquis corner lights on amazon, well the ones I saw at least, were 42 bucks, so you really might as well get marauder corners.

That fucking sucks. At least the corner lights are plentiful and cheap, if you go stock. Marauder corners/headlights are a nice upgrade though.

You're right. It wouldn't do any good even if you had their name and SSN. It's a road hazard. The only real defense is having a beater car. I put 3M wrap on the wife's BRZ to help the paint, but a big enough rock will still kill it. In your case it was probably also that the marker lamp cover was weakened and because it was so flat to the impact.

At least it isn't an expensive fix.

I drive 300+ miles per week. It's just a little extra insurance in case SOMEthing goes wrong.
Also donuts and getting rolling shots of friends' cars.

I Rain-X'd for the first time ever at the beginning of winter, clay bar and all. It worked ok for like a week. I don't see the advantage but maybe I did it wrong.

I will say that if you have to use your washer fluid regularly it doesn't last as long, unless you happen to use Rain-X washer fluid. Even then the wipers and fluid decrease the effectiveness quite a bit.
